Our trip to Malta started on Sunday, 25th of Oct. 2009.
We met at the railway station in Spittal and went to Vienna by train.
After the long, exhausting, but nevertheless very funny train trip, we took a bus to the airport. At 07:05 p.m. our plane started and after about two hours we finally arrived in Malta.
Then we went to the Astra Hotel, which had only two stars and was therefore not very comfortable. There we did the classification tests for the English Language Academy.
On Monday we went to school at 08:30 a.m. and got assigned to our teachers Mike, Patrick, Leslie, Erika, Henry, and Mary - who were all native speakers. School ended at 02:30 p.m. and after that we went to Valletta by bus. There we visited the Malta experience - an interesting documentary about the history of Malta. Then we went through the capital city and drove back to our hotel in the evening where we ate delicious pizza and chocolate cake.
On the next day we learned about idioms, words, grammar and did some pronunciation activities at school. In the afternoon the weather was nice and therefore we went to Mellieha Bay, one of the most visited and attractive beaches in Malta. This place is located on the north coast. We enjoyed swimming in the refreshing, cool sea.
On Wednesday after school we did the harbour cruise, which lasted for one and a half hours. We got on the boat in Sliema and drove from one harbour to the next. The harbour of Valletta was quite interesting because we saw the docks for the large ships. On our boat we had a guide who explained everything in English. The only bad thing was the cold wind, but we were lucky and got blankets.
We got up at 8 o'clock on Thursday, had breakfast and went to school at about 08:30. After the lessons we travelled around the south coast of Malta in a double-decker bus. We passed the ship docks, the industrial area and the countryside of the small island. At 7 o'clock, after dinner, everyone had to present his project to the group at the cliffs near the hotel.
Friday was our last school day and everybody got a certificate - all of us were either intermediate or upper-intermediate students
!! In the afternoon we had leisure time. We were allowed to discover the city and had to take photos for our calendar, which is a project at school. When the class was ready with dinner, we went to Paceville, which is a modern and famous shopping street with a lot of bars and nightclubs.
We made an interesting sightseeing tour to the north of Malta by bus on Saturday. Our first stop was Mosta, where we visited a big and imposing church. The next attraction was a medieval city called M'dina. After that great experience we drove to the awesome Golden Bay, where our class had their presentations about Malta. After returning to our "beautiful" hotel, we packed our suitcases for the departure.
Sunday was our last time in the capital city Valletta. There we visited the Museum of Archaeology and interviewed Maltese people about different topics. We did not expect such a complicated trip back home. The plane started too late and we missed the last direct train from Vienna to Carinthia. We had to take another one, which brought us to Spittal via Salzburg (where we had to wait another hour) and finally we were at home at half past 4 a.m.
The whole class would definitely recommend Malta - we had an incredible week and we absolutely would go there again!!
We improved our language skills and learned a lot in the English Language Academy, e.g. good pronunciation and many new words. Now it really makes more fun to practice and speak the language because we lost our inhibitions. In one week we saw the whole island. The 7 days were full of variety and everybody had fun but we also got to know the long, interesting and impressing history of this small country in the Mediterranean.
